We recently moved from a modern downtown loft to a charming home that was built in the early 1920s. We fell in love with the old woodwork and its unique character. With lots of new space, decorating has become our new hobby. The Restoration Hardware catalog provides plenty of inspiration, but the price tags are usually deal-breakers, so we find most of our pieces in antique shops, at estate sales or we do it ourselves. We needed a piece of art to hang in our entryway and we pulled it off for under $100! I love the black and white contrast of these subway-inspired signs. They retail for $795.
The finished product...
Since there are no subways in Minneapolis, we decided to make it more personal by highlighting our new address. The crooked frame has since been fixed.
DIY Steps:
Buy white canvas and sticky letters/numbers from a local craft shop - buy two sets of letters and numbers in different sizes. Adhere whatever numbers and text that strike your fancy, alternating the rows with medium and large-sized font. Spray paint the entire canvas black. Let dry. Peel away letters/numbers...and voila! Frame the outside with an old vintage frame or buy an inexpensive pre-framed piece of art from Home Goods, T.J. Maxx or Target - remove the glass and toss the art. Remember, the minor drips and imperfections are part of the art - they add character to the finished piece.
