PLAYING THE BUILDING An Interactive Installation by DAVID BYRNE For all you music lovers and art enthusiasts out there, you won’t want to miss your chance to see Playing the Building, a one of a kind experience in which music, architecture and art fuse together to create an extraordinary spectacle. The event is being presented by First & First LLC, a creative real estate company with a desire to transform historical spaces into cultural experiences. Playing the Building is an interactive art installation created by David Byrne, former band member of the famous Talking Heads. Byrne has transformed the interior of Aria, formerly the Jeune Lune Theater, into a massive sound sculpture that all visitors are invited to sit and “play.” The installation consists of a retrofitted antique organ, placed in the center of the building’s gallery, that will control a series of devices attached to its structural features. The devices cause the building’s elements including metal beams, pillars, electrical conduits and pipes to vibrate, echo and oscillate amazing harmonics when the organ is played. Visitors will have the opportunity to play the Aria building as a massive musical instrument. This event will be unlike anything the Twin Cities has ever seen! “Playing the Building is deceptive in its simplicity; it's layered with rich meaning relating to human nature, our contemporary relationship to place and sound, and considerations of shifts in culture at large,” says Peter Remes, Founder of First & First LLC. Playing the Building has been presented in London, New York City, Stockholm and now for the very first time in Minneapolis. Visit the Aria website to learn more and to see a schedule of special events happening in conjunction with Playing the Building. Don’t miss your chance to experience this awe-inspiring installation while it’s in town!
