Jason Hammerberg is who I have to thank for molding my husband's fashion sense. Thanks to Jason's style savvy suggestions, my husband looked incredibly dapper on our first date wearing a sport coat with a pocket square that perfectly complimented his pressed dress shirt. A couple years later, Jason was a groomsman in our wedding. Style is second nature for Jason. Starting as a menswear designer for Dayton's and Kuhlman, Jason launched Hammer Made, a collection dedicated to high quality, statement-making menswear. Located in the Galleria, you'll find well-tailored men's shirts, custom order suits, accessories and occasionally Jason's warm smile. Here is a peek at what inspires and motivates the man behind Hammer Made.
How did you get into the design industry? I grew up working in a 100+ year old traditional men's retailer in Duluth, MN - Ed Barbo's Columbia Clothing. I remember going into that same store as a kid and drooling over the clothing, even though I was too young to wear any of it. When I became old enough to wear their clothing, I got a job there. When it came time to decide on a career, I followed the advice of "do what you love". I love the men's clothing business.
How would you describe your personal style? American Dandy - meaning I love classic American styling- i.e. denim, etc.- but I love British style, especially color and pattern matching.
Where do you get your inspiration for Hammer Made? I weave together a few pieces for inspiration. First and foremost, my customer - 25 years of working in the men's business and listening to what guys want. Understanding what they will and will not compromise on and interpreting the trends for them. Secondly, attending the best fabric shows in the world and working with the best mills. Finally, when I travel internationally, I let my mind shift from financials and day to day business to absorbing everything around me: I love looking closely at the colors in nature, paintings, cultural dress, wallpaper - when I am in that mode, almost everything is inspiration.
What style tips do you have for us? For the guys, here is what you need: one great fitting two button sport-coat/blazer in a neutral color- navy, grey or subtle pattern. (Donate any sport-coat/blazer in your closet with a lapel wider than 3 inches). One pair of straight legged dark denim. Ditch your "Mom" jeans- yes, guys can have "Mom" jeans - high waisted, wide legs, bleached blue... you know the ones. Save those for yard work. Grab yourself a handful of great shirts that can double for work and date night. I know a great place ;) - hammermade.com. Top it off with a great pocket square (to keep a straight fold in your pocket square, fold it around a business card). This outfit will take you anywhere and you will have all the pockets needed for your gadgets.
What adds pep to your step? Diet Coke, Starbucks, repeat.
How do you spend your free time? Any Twin Cities hot spots that you frequent? I like to spend any free time possible with my wife Ingrid and our 15 year old Min-Pin, Polo {yes, a nod to Ralph Lauren} - All three of us like Lobster Rolls at the Smack Shack.
What have you learned about yourself and life, thus far? I have learned to stop wasting time on what other people think is important. I clearly defined what matters to me, in my life, for the long term; God, family and close friends. Being thankful, focusing on enjoying the daily process; understanding when to unplug and how to absorb. I will never get everything off of my to-do list.
