Tell us about your jewelry brand, realia by jen?
For as long as I can remember I have been buying things and tweaking them to be more reflective of my personal style. As well, I have always been creative! About six years ago, I started making jewelry at my dining room table…and on the floor, the couch and on any possible surface! It started out as a hobby, but eventually I began selling it to people who wanted both the pieces I was creating, as well as custom items. I began working on the weekends at a little boutique in my hometown and selling my jewelry there. In 2008 I started realia by jen. Currently I am focusing on growth in the United States, as well as maintaining the integrity of an American made product. Realia by jen jewelry can be found on realiabyjen.com, as well as in select boutiques.
What is the most rewarding part of being a jewelry designer?
There are so many different rewards that come from being a jewelry designer. I think that my drive to be creative is intrinsic and the process of being creative, organic. I feel blessed to have the ability to express myself in a format that is supported by a faithful customer base! I feel that I have been able to grow my brand because I started in a place that is so supportive of local businesses and I can feel the support of my community here every day.
What inspired your spring 2013 realia by jen Paris Collection?
In general my collections of jewelry are inspired by world travel, exotic destinations, and diverse cultures. I try to give each design a vintage feel with a modern flair and all of my items are handcrafted. In particular the realia by jen’s spring 2013 Paris Collection was inspired by my first experience abroad! The collection showcases a young girl (me!) in her formative years exposed to a world much more expansive than she imagined possible. Included amongst the eye opening encounters was the awakening of her sense of fashion, spurred on by her surroundings. The lingering memories from that life-changing trip have resurfaced in the colors and images of this collection.
What is your favorite piece from the collection?
Ooooo this is such a difficult question to answer, as I love them all! I would say that I vacillate between a few clutch pieces! My current, go-to favs include the blingy crystal bracelets in black diamond and hematite, the pear statement earrings in golden shadow and the cream and platinum Swarovski crystal pearl strand that can be worn as both a necklace and bracelet. I really love all of the neutral colors!
What adds pep to your step?
A uniquely stylish pair of glasses or some fabulous shoes! Perhaps both at once! You know I am all about the accessories!
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style varies greatly from day to day. I would describe my style as an eclectic mix of subtly sexy, revived vintage glam & Parisian-chic.
What do you never leave the house without?
My cell phone, business cards and a smile. Never underestimate the impact of a first and lasting impression! I am always poised and ready to network and my positive attitude helps make me memorable!
If you could live in any decade, what would it be and why?
Well, jewelry-wise I am drawn to the 1930’s and 1940’s. I love the big, chunky costume jewelry from that period of time. Politically speaking I would say the 1960’s and 70’s. It was such an intense period of turmoil and change in this country and the world and it would have been fascinating to be a first hand witness to such incredible advances. And last, but certainly not least, music-wise I LOVE the 90’s…but then again, who doesn’t?!
What is your favorite hangout in the Twin Cities?
I love to hang out anywhere that serves GREAT food, GREAT drinks or both! Downtown Minneapolis and the North Loop area are particular favs!
